I decided to make my 3D animation out of wood. I could not decide whether I wanted to make a pterodactyl or a dragon so I asked my little brother what he would prefer for my design was going to be catered to his age range, when giving him the option between a dragon or a dinosaur he chose the dragon so that is the design I chose.

When planning for my dragons’ wing cycle I used bats as a reference for I felt that their wing layout was the closest to that of a dragons. I planned on making the sound effect with a large sheet of nylon fabric held together with two sticks and then use my condenser microphone to capture the sound. I will then edit the sound to loop with the dragons’ wing cycle.

When planning for my 3D model I looked at a lot of clock mechanics as well as another mechanical toy making company known as UGEARS. Looking at these helped me gain a better understanding of wooden mechanics and helped inspire me in the design of my mechanism. Once I had finished the basic sketch of my toy design I then went on to 3D model it using google sketch up were I got a better grasp of the sizes and layout of the toy so that I could begin the building process.
