About

Ron arad is a contemporary modern designer and was born on 24 April 1951 in Isreal. On 1999 he established the Ron Arad Studio, design and production unit in Como, Italy and he was also a Professor of Design Product at the Royal College of Art in London up until 2009. He was later awarded the 2011 London Design Week Medal for his designs and became a Royal Academician of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2013. He first became noticed after the production of his Rover chair, wich took a seat from a LandRover and added a metal frame to it to make a chair. He also became known for his bookwork bookshelf which was still produced in 2011 by the Italian company Kartell.
Style
Most of Arads designs are designed in a modern minimalist style, having a smooth and ergonomic look to them. A recuring feature of his work that I have noticed is the lack of corners and edges. They all look rounded, almost as if it is flowing and natural, but he counteracts this by using unatural materials like metal and plastics. I feel that this is done to portray a harmony between urban life and nature.

Technique
In Arads biography he states how he enjoys making his products from metals like aluminium and steel, as well as playing with some acrylics. For alot of his metal pieces it looks like it was welded together allowing a rough and original feel to come from the product were as for his plastic work it looks alot more controlled and padantic so i feel that they were made with a jet or resin mould.
Inspiration
When searching for inspiration from other artists i found that in his biography he states that he never actualy got inspired by any other artists, but when looking at some of his design sketches I noticed that he uses free hand movements to get a frame. It was because of this that I felt he gained his inspiration from nature and the natural movements like water and other things.
My opinion
I realy like the style of Ron Arad his sleek style for both his buildings and products always look original, but when looking at materials I prefer wood and would like to see him work with wood for some of his products. Other than that I thoroughly enjoy his work.
