About

Nick Kaloterakis is a 3D graphic designer from Greece. He studied photography and design before movingto Sydney. In the year 200 he graduated with a diploma in 3D animation and visual effects from the Design Centre in Sydney. He was later awarded a scholarship to work with a Sydney post-production studio. Kaloterakis began to become noticed after he began to use high-resolution print jobs that included 3D illustration and photo manipulation. From then on, other publications approached him from the USA and Europe including National Geographic, NY Times and Wired.

Style

Nick Kaloterakiss' style tends to differ from project to project. Often because the people he works for have different intrests but a recuring theme of the jobs he has taken is that of an enguineering stand point. He like to make 3D sets of things like plane and spaceships often

dabbling in the relms of science fiction in some of his peices. He also plays around with the concept of sustainability and human expansion in his illistrations drawing things like eutopias and advanced vehicles. One peice that he made was an image were the nozel on a petrol pump was tied into a neuss and the other had a light bulb. I feel that this is a metaphore for the fact that we are slowly killing ourselves with the over use of non renewable sorces and we need to think of somthing new quickly. He tends not to create anything with nature involved often focusing on the man made instead of natural landscapes.

Technique

For his 3D work Kaloterakis uses Maya and a rendering softwere known as VRay. He models the initial shape of the model and then using VRay he adds depth and texture to his imagery. When trying to get a good feel for the mood of the scene he runs a pre-light pass to establish a connection between proxy mode and LookDev and that gives a realy good impretion of the final product in the early stages.

Inspiration

My opinion

I like the work Nick does. He Makes some very original enguineeing concepts with a futuristic style. I aspecialy like his how it works peices were he splits machines in half and shows the inside workings of the item. He is very good at the lighting and angles of light making all his models fit extremely well withing the background. If I were to take anything from his work I would use his rendering work as an example, as well as the fact that while researching I learnt of a new rendering softer called VRay, of wich I intend to use and learn.
