Metals

Nathans work is largely based around old Celtic and Nordic artwork mainly looking at the knot work done on old jewellery and other artworks. He wanted his work to look rustic and used like it had been made in old Scandinavia. The main craft theme behind the two pieces is the primary use of wire as well as keeping to a set colour scheme of red and amber. The colour scheme was chosen because it would contrast best with the colours of the metal and the use of Wire was taken from the inspiration of Celtic knots.

Glass

Nathans work is based off of a creature that he had designed. The initial creature design took inspiration from moles and used crystals as a food source but when expanding on this Idea he came up with the Idea of a creature that eats whatever is near it and grows what it eats out of its back meaning that the same animal from a different environment could look completely different from another. His sculpture was based on his design of his creature set in an urban environment using the rubble and rebar as a method of portraying the effect the environment can have on wildlife. The glass portion was made from cast glass and the base was made using hot metal and cinderblocks.

Ceramics

Nathan has developed this mug design around the concept of it being good for use by a surfer/traveller, with its open ended handle making it perfect for hanging up and its curved shape making it easy to bury it in the sand. The natural free flowing shape of the mug is inspired by the natural movements of the ocean as well as providing stable grip for cold hands. This mug was made using a base model that had been thrown and a mug handle that had been 3D printed. Using these two models Nathan created slip casting moulds in order to mass produce his mug design.

Personal

Nathan is a year 1 3D design student. He finds that his main inspirations are things you find in nature like natural movements and shapes. He also likes to hold strong ties to old techniques and styles and attempts to reinvent these so that they can apply to modern media. Questioning the norm is his forte and he hopes that everything he may design will always get a second glance.
